Pigmented Lesion Removal Q & A

What are pigmented lesions?

Pigmented lesions are patches of skin that are brown, black, or blue. The color most often comes from natural bodily sources in the form of the brownish-black pigment melanin and sometimes blood cells, or may be due to an external cause such as tattooing.

Most pigmented lesions are due to the presence of epidermal cells that are able to produce their own melanin. Exposure to the ultraviolet rays from the sun speeds up the rate at which the body produces melanin, and this is what results in the darker color of tanned skin.

Areas that suffer chronic or extensive exposure to the sun are often where brown spots occur, commonly called liver, age, or sun spots.

Are pigmented lesions dangerous?

It’s natural to be concerned about the risk of skin cancer when you have lesions on your skin, and you should always keep an eye on any moles or marks you have and get them checked out by your doctor if you see any changes.

Most pigmented lesions aren’t a cause for alarm, and they’re often the result of overexposure to the sun and the effects of the aging process.

When you visit Dr. Mian, she takes a close look at your skin and lets you know if she’s concerned about any lesions.

How are pigmented lesions removed?

Dr. Mian uses the Icon® Aesthetic Laser System to remove troublesome pigmented lesions. The technology in Icon makes use of optimized pulsed light that can be altered to target specific skin conditions.

During a pigmented lesion removal procedure, Dr. Mian passes the Icon handpiece over the target area, and the light pulses break down the lesions without harming the surrounding skin.

Over the next few weeks, your skin’s natural healing processes get to work, and you’ll see the lesions growing darker and flaking away. The new skin underneath is regenerated and replaces the pigmented lesion with unblemished skin.

The removal of pigmented lesions is a safe and speedy procedure that produces excellent results. To find out more about pigmented lesion removal, call Serene Laser and Skin Care today, or book an appointment online.
