Why Do I Have Spider Veins on My Face and How Can I Get Rid of Them?

If you have spider veins on your face, they can make you self-conscious. Fortunately, you don’t have to keep them. Shaheen Mian, MD, a facial skin revitalization specialist at Serene Laser and Skin Care in Milton, Massachusetts, can help you with a number of skin issues, including  spider veins.

Why spider veins appear

Spider veins occur when the tiny blood vessels under the surface of your skin break. This results in the annoying red marks and lines that look like spider webs. Spider veins can occur due to age, rosacea, too much sun exposure, genetics, obesity, liver disease, and blood clots. Hormones, menopause, pregnancy, and using birth control pills can also lead to spider veins.

Spider veins develop in women more than men, and your chances of getting them increase with age. Furthermore, drinking alcohol frequently or sustaining a head injury can increase your chances of developing spider veins on your face.

Getting rid of spider veins

First, Dr. Mian inspects your spider veins to make sure they’re not a sign of something more serious, such as problems with blood flow. To treat your spider veins, Dr. Mian can choose from several options:

Retinoid creams

Retinoid creams are a topical solution. While they are great at reducing the appearance of spider veins and making your skin healthier, they can also make your skin dry and red.

Sclerotherapy

With sclerotherapy, Dr. Mian injects a solution of concentrated saline into each vein. The vein should disappear in 3-6 weeks.

Icon laser therapy

With Icon® laser therapy, Dr. Mian gently moves the laser over the surface of your skin and onto the broken blood vessels. Pulses of light are shot into the veins, thus destroying them. The veins are then eliminated naturally by your body. Not only does the surrounding skin stay unharmed, but the laser stimulates the growth of new skin.

The treatments usually last for 5-30 minutes. You may feel some warmth, or what some patients describe as the sensation of having a rubber band snapping against your skin. The time it will take to see results and the number of treatments you will need will depend on the veins you are treating. Smaller spider veins may vanish immediately in one treatment. Larger veins may take 1-3 months to disappear and will probably require several sessions.
