Laser Hair Removal: It’s Not Just for Women

We get it. Just like a majority of women, men also worry about getting rid of unwanted hair. Just like women, men shave, wax, and pluck to get rid of annoying hair growth that pops up precisely where you don’t want it.

Here at Serene Laser and Skin Care in Milton, Massachusetts, Dr. Shaheen Mian is a medical aesthetics expert who offers laser hair removal for both men and women who want to reduce the time they spend on temporary hair-removal methods. We want to help eliminate your hair, and your frustration, of always having to shave or wax away unwanted hair.

If you’re a man in the greater Boston area, who’s interested in learning more about laser hair removal, we’re happy to help. Here’s why it’s not just for women.

Men can benefit from laser hair removal, too

Laser hair removal isn’t just for women. It’s for anyone who wants to reduce the amount of hair on their body or get rid of areas of unwanted hair. It’s for men and women who don’t want to plan extra time for shaving, waxing, or other time-consuming hair removal methods that only deliver temporary results.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see with our male patients is that they think laser hair removal was designed for women. Nothing could be further from the truth. While there may have been a time when a majority of the men who did opt for laser hair removal treatments were bodybuilders, cyclists, and swimmers, we now see men from all walks of life come in for customized laser hair removal procedures.

Whether you prefer to think of it as conscientious grooming as a 21st-century male, “manscaping,” or simply as laser hair removal, Dr. Mian provides state-of-the-art, effective treatments for all hair types using the Icon® Aesthetic Laser System.

Laser hair removal isn’t necessarily an “all or nothing” option

While women often prefer to completely eliminate as much hair as possible on their legs or underarms, for example, we understand that our male patients may not desire the same outcome. While laser hair removal certainly can eliminate nearly all the hair in a specific treatment area, it doesn’t have to. It actually takes a series of laser treatments over several months’ time to fully eradicate hair growth.

Many men opt for laser hair removal to simply reduce the amount of hair in a specific area, especially across the chest, rather than eliminate hair growth completely. Partial hair removal is also common on the neck, where many men struggle with razor burn and ingrown hairs. When Dr. Mian removes just a portion of this hair, it often eliminates the problem and may even help the skin in these sensitive areas become less susceptible to blemishes and irritation.

The Icon laser safely treats almost any area of your body

Here at Serene Laser and Skin Care, Dr. Mian treats all the areas of your body where you’d like less hair and less hassle shaving, waxing, and trimming. As a highly trained medical aesthetics professional, Dr. Mian understands that many times unwanted hair grows in hard to reach areas with a razor. She is accustomed to performing laser hair removal treatments on just about all parts of the male body.

The Icon Aesthetic System makes it safe to perform treatments anywhere except close to your eyes where the skin is extremely delicate. Some of the most common areas our male clients request hair removal includes:

If you’re concerned about skin sensitivity, Dr. Mian first applies a cooling gel to the treatment area so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. The Icon system allows her to quickly treat areas both small and large, so the whole experience is over quickly.

What to know before your appointment

Before your laser hair removal, you need to prepare your treatment area. This means you need to avoid plucking or tweezing your hair for at least six weeks before your scheduled appointment. You should also avoid the sun and tanning beds, as the more contrast between your skin and your hair (light skin, dark hair), the more effective the treatment process.

You also should shave the treatment area before your appointment. If you forget or need help, we can shave or trim the area once you arrive.

Laser hair removal is practically painless

If you’re worried about the pain associated with laser hair removal, it’s not nearly as bad as other methods. Considering that waxing is a temporary hair removal method, it’s at least 40% more painful than Icon laser treatments. Most of our patients, both men, and women report the sensation as feeling like a rubber band snapping on your skin.

And since Dr. Mian applies a cooling gel to the treatment area before beginning, you can rest assured you’ll be quite comfortable throughout the procedure.

Your skin may be a little pink immediately following treatment

Although laser hair removal is noninvasive, it sometimes leaves your skin looking like you have a minor sunburn. This redness typically fades within 24 hours or so, and your skin returns to normal. It’s nothing to worry about, but you should avoid heavy workouts, hot tubs, and saunas.

Otherwise, there’s no downtime, and you can return to your daily routine without interruption.

If you’ve been thinking about laser hair removal but didn’t know where to start, give us a call today or request an appointment online. We look forward to answering your questions and helping you find a more permanent, hassle-free solution to unwanted hair.
