How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

The average woman shaves 12 times a month and spends almost 11 minutes each time. Over her lifetime, that means spending more than 58 days just on shaving, at a cost of $10,555. If she waxes, it costs closer to $23,000 over her lifetime.

Men do their fair share of grooming as well. It’s estimated that they shave their faces about 10,000 times over their lifespan. At an average of 170 swipes of the razor blade each time, that’s 1.7 million strokes. No wonder the men’s shaving market is an $11 billion industry.

Shaheen Mian, MD, at Serene Laser and Skin Care can help you stop the madness. She can remove your unwanted hair for good with the Icon® Aesthetic Laser System. Laser hair removal effectively halts hair growth, eliminating the sometimes daily chore of shaving.

Why laser hair removal?

In addition to saving you time and money, the Icon laser hair removal system comes with a few more fringe benefits.

Laser hair removal is one of the safest cosmetic procedures on the market. It’s FDA-approved, can be used on men and women with all skin types, is noninvasive, and requires no downtime.

During your laser hair removal process, you may feel a warming sensation from the laser device, a cooling sensation from the gel, and possibly little pinprick sensations during the procedure — but no pain. And once it’s over, there’s no discomfort or pain to deal with. Compare that to the nicks and cuts you get when shaving and the excruciating pain of ripping your hair out with hot wax.

Environmentally friendly

Laser hair removal can help you save the planet. Based on the average amount of water used during the 11 minutes of shaving time, multiplied by 5 gallons per minute, the average woman wastes 7,848 gallons every year, or 420,652 gallons of water over the course of her lifetime, on shaving alone. That’s almost enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool. And laser hair removal means no more razors in landfills.

How long does laser hair removal take?

The length of your in-office laser hair removal treatment depends on the amount of hair you want to eliminate and where it’s located. A small area like your brows or upper lip only takes a few minutes per session. Larger surfaces like legs and backs may take up to an hour per session.

How many sessions do I need?

Everyone is different. Again, depending on how much hair, where it’s growing, how much surface area, and your body’s unique response to the treatment, you can expect to complete between three and seven sessions to remove all of your unwanted hair.

It’s best to give your body some time — about a month to a month and a half — in between those sessions. The reason for this is that laser hair removal is a process based on how your body hair grows.

When we use the laser to destroy your hair follicles, you notice a difference in the amount of hair you see. However, some of your follicles will be dormant during your first session. That’s why several sessions are necessary: We can only neutralize the follicles that are actively producing hair, so we need to keep applying the laser until it has destroyed all of them.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Most people don’t have to deal with unwanted hair in a laser-treated area again. However, it’s not unusual to undergo a maintenance treatment now and then to keep your skin smooth and bare.
